Third Paper--Please Comment!

As you know, for this third paper, you will be taking a position on an issue--one which is discussed in one of the course readings (either from the Reader or Starting Lines). You will explain, and support, your position following the "Basic Features" we discussed in class (and that are in the Reader).

You can take one of two approaches to this paper. They are:

1) Take a position on the AUTHOR'S VIEWPOINT. Do you agree, disagree, or something between, with the author? Why?

2) Take a position on the ISSUE ITSELF. Are you for, against, or in the middle, on this issue? Why? If you choose this option, you must use the reading to either SUPPORT your points, or to act as the "opposing view," which you will respond to in counterargument.

With that in mind, please write in the comment area here to say which of the options you will use, and which reading you will use, as well. Thanks!

I have chosen to write my third paper based on the essay discussing the atrocious nature of torture used by the U.S. military. In addition, I would like to discuss torture in more detail and argue that it is a necessary evil.

My third paper would be written on the essay "Who Is Torture Really Hurting." After 9/11, the rate of torture has increased drastically and has become a very debatable issue. Concerns have risen since 'torture' has become a common method misused by military organizations to punish and interogate victims. Our military bodies must recognize and stop these sinister inflictions of torture.

My third essay will be on the ssay dealing with torture and how it can affect both the soldiers conducting the torture, and those being tortured.

I have chosen to write my essay on "The Wal-Mart You Don't Know." I would like to comment on the negative effects Wal-Mart is bringing and its effect on the economy as a whole.

The essay I have chosen to write about for my third paper is " Children Need to Play Not Compete " by Jessica Statsky. This essay interest me the most. It made me look at childrems sports in a different light. Also forced me to have a change in my opinion. I never looked at Children sports as physically and psychologically harmful.

I will be writing my third essay based on the story “Children need to play not compete” by Jessica Stasky. I will be arguing how competing at such a young age is not always bad and how it can actually help shape an individual.

For the third paper assignment I am going to write on the essay in the course reader about children involved in competatiave sports. I am going take the second approach to writting the essay by stating my opinion on the issue and using the essay to support my point of view.

I've chosen "Bilingualism in America: English Should Be the Only Language" by S.I. Hayakawa. I agree with the author because I believe a common language has more societal benefits rather than creating two or more “common” languages. There are a few points I disagree with, such as immigrants’ being unable to share characteristics of race, religion, ect, but I agree with Hayakawa’s overall message.

My third essay will be about "Children need to play not compete" by Jessica Stasky. The position the author takes troubles me to believe otherwise. I believe there should be some sort of competiveness to promote aspirations and confidence.

I'm writing my third paper on the article, "More Testing, More Learning." I agree with the authors views that frequent testing leads to more learning.
